Switching inspection software is painful, so it's worth choosing carefully the first time. This guide is the advice we'd give a friend entering the business — including the questions vendors hope you won't ask.
Start with your actual business, not the feature list
- Where do you inspect? Rural or spotty coverage → offline capability is non-negotiable.
- What do you inspect? If termite/WDO is (or will be) part of your work, most mainstream tools are disqualified immediately.
- What else do you sell? Service plans, annual re-inspections, or maintenance programs need recurring billing.
- Who else works with you? Multi-inspector teams need real collaboration — two people on one property without overwriting each other.
Questions that expose weak software
- "Can I complete an entire inspection in airplane mode — photos, findings, everything?" (Then actually try it.)
- "Show me a finished sample report on a phone screen." Clients read reports on phones; walls of text fail.
- "What does the total monthly cost look like with agreements, payments, and texting included?"
- "Can two inspectors work the same inspection at once? What happens if both edit offline?"
- "What happens to my data and templates if I leave?"
The traps
- The demo-day effect. Everything is fast on the salesperson's WiFi. Judge the app in a basement.
- Per-feature pricing creep. A $79 base plan that becomes $160 after the add-ons you actually need.
- "We're working on that." Buy the product that exists today, not the roadmap.
A simple evaluation test
Take your trial to a real inspection (or re-walk your own house). Airplane mode on. Full workflow: schedule, agreement, 100 photos, findings from a template, generate the report, then reconnect and send it. Time yourself. The software that gets you from driveway to delivered report fastest — without losing a single photo — is the right one. That test, more than any feature chart, is why inspectors choose Inspection Authority.
See it in the field, not a sales deck
Inspection Authority was built by a Certified Master Inspector who still inspects every week. Home inspections, termite/WDO reports, recurring pest-control billing, and true offline mode — in one app.
